Intrauterine Insemination, IUI

Intrauterine insemination, or IUI, may be able to help you welcome a baby

As head of ArkLaTex Fertility and Reproductive Medicine, David T. Vandermolen MD uses proven fertility treatments to achieve stellar results for our patients. We partner with intended parents to ensure that they receive top-notch treatment and compassionate care. Our Northern Louisiana fertility doctor may begin treatment with IUI, or intrauterine insemination. Also known as artificial insemination, this treatment places sperm directly into the uterus to increase the likelihood of conceiving.

Receive personalized care at our fertility clinic

We understand that each patient’s fertility journey is unique. Before beginning any treatment, Dr. Vandermolen will order a complete fertility evaluation. This assessment will involve a full medical history, bloodwork, a physical exam and an ultrasound, as well as a semen analysis for the male partner. These results can help our Northern Louisiana fertility doctor decide on next steps, which may mean examining the benefits of intrauterine insemination.

When to consider IUI

Sometimes, nature needs assistance. With this treatment, Dr. Vandermolen puts a concentrated amount of sperm directly into the uterus, increasing the likelihood of conception. Less invasive and often more cost-effective than IVF, our Northern Louisiana fertility doctor may suggest intrauterine insemination as the preferred fertility treatment in the following cases.

  • Women with known ovulation issues.
  • Female patients with abnormal cervical mucus or scar tissue.
  • Men diagnosed with mild to moderate male factor infertility.
  • Single women, female-female couples, or male-female couples using donor sperm.
  • Couples or individuals with unexplained infertility.

The actual intrauterine insemination process involves several steps.

  • The male partner provides a semen sample and our laboratory team washes and prepares it for the procedure, or a donor specimen is thawed and prepared.
  • We ultrasound monitor the female partner during her cycle, observing her ovaries and watching follicle development.
  • At the appropriate time, generally right at ovulation, we will schedule the IUI.
  • During the procedure, Dr. Vandermolen uses a catheter to place the sperm directly into the uterus.

Patients will typically rest for a brief period after the intrauterine insemination and can generally resume normal activities right after. About two weeks after the procedure, the female patient has a pregnancy test to confirm whether or not she is pregnant.
