Find out if there’s a fertility diet to improve your likelihood of conceiving
When you’re trying to conceive, sorting through all the suggestions and recommendations about how to optimize fertility can seem daunting. David T. Vandermolen MD, MS can help. He works with patients at our Northern Louisiana fertility center to separate fact from fiction when it comes to improving fertility. One common area of discussion is the concept of a fertility diet.
Does a fertility diet even exist?
While good nutrition is important, little scientific evidence exists to support the idea of a specific fertility diet. However, you can optimize your fertility by working with a specialist like Dr. Vandermolen.
He can complete a full fertility assessment and create a customized treatment plan to improve your odds of conceiving. Our practice offers proven therapies like intrauterine insemination and IVF to help our patients achieve their family-building goals.
Ways to use nutrition to optimize fertility
As we mentioned, nutrition is important, as healthy eating can improve your likelihood of having a healthy baby. The team at our Northern Louisiana fertility center recommends making the following adjustments to your diet.
Consume nutrient-rich foods. We suggest increasing your daily intake of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins to ensure a balanced diet.
Add in healthy fats. Not all fats are created equal. As such, choose foods high in omega-3 fatty acids like avocados, nuts, seeds, olive oil and fish.
Limit processed carbs and saturated fats. Soft drinks, sugary snacks, white bread and chips can spike blood sugar and insulin levels. This can interfere with hormone production.
Avoid alcohol. Drinking, even in small amounts, while trying to get pregnant can reduce vitamin absorption. It can also interfere with the development of a growing baby.
Take a good vitamin. Women who are pregnant or trying to become pregnant need a vitamin with at least 400 micrograms of folic acid to reduce the risk of problems like spina bifida.
Trying to get pregnant without success can leave you frustrated. Our Northern Louisiana fertility center is here to offer compassionate care and medical expertise on your journey to parenthood. Contact our office for more information about a fertility diet or to schedule an appointment.
