Blocked Fallopian Tubes

Parenthood is still possible, even with blocked fallopian tubes

All the parts of the female reproductive system need to work together to make pregnancy possible. This includes the fallopian tubes, and not just the ovaries and the uterus. When a woman has blocked fallopian tubes, it is more difficult for the sperm to find the egg. It can also prevent a fertilized egg from reaching the uterus.

The good news is that Dr. David T. Vandermolen offers treatment and hope for those with tubal infertility. Learning how can empower you on your journey to bring home a baby.

Why are fallopian tubes important?

Fallopian tubes play a vital role in conception. First, they connect the ovaries to the uterus.

  • The ovaries make and release the eggs.
  • The uterus is where the embryo will grow and develop into a baby.

These tubes are more than just a pathway between the ovaries and uterus, though.

When a woman ovulates (releases an egg), the sperm will find and fertilize it in one of the fallopian tubes. After fertilization, the egg will move to the uterus and implant there. A blockage in the tubes interferes with this process.

What causes blocked fallopian tubes?

A blockage in the fallopian tubes can occur due to scar tissue, infection or pelvic adhesions. Having endometriosis can also increase the risk of developing a tubal blockage.

Many patients don’t realize they have a blockage until they have trouble conceiving. However, others may experience chronic, mild pain on one side of the abdomen.

Our North Louisiana fertility specialist can order testing to determine if a fallopian tube blockage is an issue.

The results can help Dr. Vandermolen create a customized fertility treatment plan.
