What Kind of Fertility Testing Do I Need?

Fertility testing options can shine a light on barriers to pregnancy

At our Northern Louisiana fertility center, David T. Vandermolen MD understands that trying to conceive without success takes an emotional and physical toll. As your trusted partner, Dr. Vandermolen works hard to identify any hindrances to conception. He then develops a detailed plan to help you have a healthy pregnancy. A key component of this process is ordering different fertility testing options.

Beginning the infertility treatment process

If you and your partner have tried for one year without success, you need to look into fertility testing options. Female patients over age 35 should consider intervention after six months of trying to conceive.

Because infertility can affect both men and women, Dr. Vandermolen generally recommends a thorough assessment of both partners. It begins with a complete medical history on each side and lab work and a physical exam for female patients. Male partners will have a semen analysis.

Exploring fertility testing options

We understand that infertility treatment can feel overwhelming, and we want to help our patients feel at ease during this process. Because no one test will likely pinpoint all the causes of infertility, Dr. Vandermolen generally recommends a variety of fertility testing options. The following tests are common at our Northern Louisiana fertility center.

Blood tests. To analyze your hormones and look for any irregularities, we will check your levels of progesterone, estradiol, follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), anti-Mullerian hormone (AMH) and luteinizing hormone (LH).

Transvaginal ultrasound. With an ultrasound, our doctor can visualize the female reproductive system and look for structural abnormalities.

Hysterosalpingogram (HSG). With this test, a type of X-ray of the fallopian tubes and uterus, Dr. Vandermolen injects a dye solution into the uterine cavity to identify any blockages.

If you want solutions to challenges when trying to conceive, we can help. Dr. Vandermolen and the ArkLaTex Fertility team will provide the compassionate care and clinical expertise you need. Contact our Northern Louisiana fertility center to schedule an appointment.
