Advanced Fertility Surgery

What you should know before deciding on advanced fertility surgery

Advanced fertility surgery can correct anatomical barriers to getting pregnant, but many women worry about the pain, downtime and expense of fertility surgery. If you’re concerned, our North Louisiana fertility clinic has some information to ease your mind.

Choose an experienced reproductive surgeon

Dr. David T. Vandermolen, of ArkLaTex Fertility and Reproductive Medicine, performs minimally invasive laparoscopic and hysteroscopic fertility surgery with more than 25 years experience.

Hysteroscopic fertility surgery provides a view of the uterus, during which a hysteroscope is inserted carefully through the vagina and cervix into the uterus. Reproductive surgeons like Dr. Vandermolen perform hysteroscopic fertility surgery to treat or diagnose the following

  • Removal of uterine adhesions
  • Fibroid removal
  • Polypectomy
  • Uterine septum resection

Laparoscopic surgery is a keyhole technique that uses a lighted telescopic instrument to visualize, and often times, correct the problem. It is performed under general anesthesia on an outpatient basis at ArkLaTex Fertility’s onsite/or preferred surgery center. Applications for laparoscopic surgery include

  • Endometriosis resection
  • Fibroid resection
  • Pelvic cyst resection
  • Pelvic adhesion resection
  • Myomectomy
Laparoscopy and hysteroscopy can be used for both diagnostic (looking only) and operative (looking and treating) purposes. – American Society for Reproductive Medicine

Tubal ligation (sterilization reversal) is done to restore tubal patency after prior ligation. Done least expensively through a small “mini” lower abdominal “bikini” cut incision, this is an option for conception when tubal damage done at ligation was not excessive and other infertility factors are not present. Dr. Vandermolen will guide you through the factors important in choosing between tubal reversal and IVF.

Dr. Vandermolen is board certified as a reproductive endocrinologist and fertility specialist with training that includes reproductive surgery. In fact, Dr. Vandermolen is the only full time reproductive endocrinologist within a two-hour radius of Shreveport-Bossier.

Every patient is different, and Dr. Vandermolen may recommend fertility surgery as a first-line treatment, after fertility screening tests are complete. In other cases, Dr. Vandermolen may advise you to consider fertility drug therapy and/or in-vitro fertilization (IVF) in lieu of surgery.

Whether you require surgery for endometriosis or tubal ligation reversal, Dr. Vandermolen will offer guidance, expert care and a comprehensive list of options. At ArkLaTex Fertility, our goal is to maximize your chances of conceiving a baby, with superior, state-of-the-art care delivered by a compassionate healthcare team.
